Day 1
St. Martin of Castrozza
Welcome to the heart of the Dolomites! This is a journey that marks the beginning of an unforgettable adventure. Your base camp will be San Martino di Castrozza, a charming Alpine town nestled at the foot of the Pale plateau. This place, with its long tradition of tourism, has fascinated hikers and mountaineers for centuries, attracted by the imposing beauty of the Pale di San Martino group.
Day 2
Climb to the Pale di San Martino
Ascent: 1220 m | Descent: 160 m | Altitude: 1400 - 2580 m | Distance: 9 km | Travel time: 5 hours
The first day of trekking begins with a spectacular climb to the Pale plateau. You will follow an ancient 19th-century mule track, once used by noble European tourists who, escorted by donkeys, were led up to the peaks to admire the view. Despite the difference in altitude, the path never becomes excessively steep. If you leave in the morning, you will reach the refuge by mid-day, with time to tackle an optional hike to Cima Rosetta (2,743 m). A little extra effort will give you an extraordinary view of the entire plateau.
Day 3
Fradusta Peak
Ascent: 460 m | Descent: 780 m | Altitude: 2280 - 2940 m | Distance: 9 km | Travel time: 5 hours
Today you will enter the heart of the plateau, reaching Passo Fradusta. Beyond the pass, a small alpine lake reflects the glacier that creeps along the mountain slopes. After exploring this natural wonder, you can try the climb to Cima Fradusta (2,939 m). On clear days, the view extends to the Adriatic and the Venice lagoon. The return path will take you next to a crystal-clear lake before reaching the refuge, where a hot dinner awaits you.
Day 4
Southern end of the Pale
Ascent: 480 m | Descent: 1120 m | Altitude: 1300 - 2280 m | Distance: 9 km | Travel time: 5 hours
Today you will leave the plateau to immerse yourself in the southern valleys, where thick forests replace the lunar landscapes of the previous days. We suggest a stop at the Pale di San Martino museum, housed in a panoramic villa overlooking the plateau. After reaching the refuge for lunch, you can take a circular hike to Bivacco Minazio (2,250 m), a little-used path that will take you near the wreck of an American military plane that crashed in 1957.
Day 5
Across the Pale Plateau
Ascent: 1220 m | Descent: 270 m | Altitude: 1630 - 2660 m | Distance: 10 km | Travel time: 6 hours
This day is considered one of the most fascinating for trekking lovers. After a short climb, the trail winds along the eastern edge of the plateau, offering breathtaking views of the Civetta group and other Dolomite peaks. You will then enter the heart of the plateau, crossing a surreal and primordial landscape, until you reach the refuge for the night.
Day 6
Rolle Pass
Ascent: 450 m | Descent: 950 m | Altitude: 1930 - 2580 m | Distance: 9 km | Travel time: 4 hours
Today you will leave the plateau to reach Passo Rolle (1,980 m), the ideal point to admire the entire Pale di San Martino massif. After a short descent, you will find yourself surrounded by green alpine pastures and you will be able to take spectacular photographs of the Cimon della Pala. Here you can explore the famous Baita Segantini, an icon of the Dolomites, and enjoy a lunch overlooking the imposing peaks.
Day 7
Lagorai and Colbricon Lakes
Ascent: 360 m | Descent: 970 m | Altitude: 1400 - 2310 m | Distance: 10 km | Travel time: 5 hours
The last day will take you through the Lagorai mountain range, where the landscape changes again: alpine lakes and lush forests replace the rugged rocks of the plateau. A stop at the Colbricon Lakes (2,160 m) is a must: here you can relax, have lunch in a hut and, for the more daring, take a dip in the crystal-clear waters. The day ends with a gentle descent towards San Martino di Castrozza.
Day 8
St. Martin of Castrozza
Your adventure across the largest plateau in the Dolomites comes to an end. In just a few days, you have crossed lunar landscapes, admired fiery sunsets from Passo Rolle and discovered breathtaking views from the Lagorai chain. Each step has brought you closer to the grandeur of nature, leaving you with memories that will stay with you forever.
