Why Choose the Trekking of Legends?
- ✓ Explore two of Italy's most iconic Dolomite groups —the Pale di San Martino and the Fassa Dolomites, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites
- ✓ Walk on silent and almost deserted paths — few other routes in the Dolomites offer this level of solitude even in the height of summer
- ✓ Traverse an extraordinary variety of alpine landscapes — flowering meadows, coniferous forests, rocky plateaus, scree slopes and mountain lakes in a single route
- ✓ Admire the legendary northwest face of the Pale di San Martino —one of the most photographed views of the Italian Alps, seen from Passo Rolle
- ✓ Discover the silent traces of the Great War – trenches, artillery positions and forts that still mark these mountains
- ✓ Reach, in the extended option, Cima Fradusta at 2,700–3,000 m — a lunar landscape and a 360° view that few hikers have the privilege of seeing
A Path Where the Mountains Tell Stories
This trek isn't simply a hut-to-hut itinerary through the Dolomites. It's a journey through places steeped in history, myth, and wild beauty. The trail connects two distinct yet complementary mountain ranges: the Fassa Dolomites , with their classic Alpine charm and vibrant Ladin culture, and the Pale di San Martino , a karst plateau suspended in time, so vast and surreal it seems like a planet unto itself. This is precisely why it's called the Trek of Legends —and the name isn't an exaggeration.
The route begins in the Val di San Nicolo , a secluded valley that opens like a secret from the more famous Val di Fassa. Here, the silence is almost absolute. The valley floor meadows give way to coniferous forests, then to high-altitude pastures, and finally to the barren and spectacular terrain of the Monzoni Group —the wildest and most remote section of the entire itinerary. After crossing the Cirele Pass at 2,683 meters , the landscape transforms again: wide scree slopes, boundless views of the Dolomites, and finally the descent to San Martino di Castrozza through the Lagorai Group , where granite replaces dolomite and Lake Colbricon offers a respite of absolute peace.
The Challenge: Variety, Difference, Reward
The Trekking delle Leggende is classified as Level 3 (Moderate) —accessible to hikers in good physical shape with no technical expertise required. But moderate doesn't mean easy. The Monzoni Group requires climbs over completely bare terrain, with stable but challenging scree. Walking days average 5–6 hours with significant elevation gain, and the lack of infrastructure between the refuges means each stage is self-guided. This is precisely where the satisfaction comes from: every step gained transforms into a panorama you'll never forget.
This is a trail that rewards those who stop and listen to the mountains. Traces of the First World War still emerge on the ridges. Local legends of the Ladin communities live on in the names of the passes and valleys. The refuges—some of the most well-maintained in the region—offer genuine Alpine hospitality that transforms an evening after a long day of walking into something warm and memorable. Returning home with this trek in your body and your eyes is an experience that changes the way you look at the mountains.
Who is this trek for?
Physical Requirements: To undertake this route, you must be in good physical shape and have mountain hiking experience. No technical climbing experience is required, but you must be comfortable with 5–6-hour days on alpine terrain, including scree and sustained climbs. If you regularly hike in the mountains and are comfortable on marked trails at high altitude, this route is for you.
Refuge Accommodation: Nights are spent in some of the region's most comfortable mountain huts, with the option of booking private rooms when available. After a day of trekking through legendary landscapes, gathering around the table with a hot dinner in a mountain hut is an integral part of the experience—not just a simple overnight stay, but the very heart of this journey in the Dolomites.

Discover the program.
Day 1
Arrival in Val di Fassa
You will arrive independently in the suggestive Val di Fassa, a place where the majestic Dolomites will welcome you with breathtaking landscapes and an authentic Alpine atmosphere. Your starting point will be the heart of the valley, where you will spend the night with a view of the peaks of the Monzoni Group, your destination for the next few days. This first evening will be perfect for you to settle in, savor the local cuisine and relax before diving into the adventure that awaits you.
Day 2
St. Nicholas Valley
+ 650m | - 370m | 4h00 | 9km
Your trek begins with a short transfer to Vidòr, the gateway to Val San Nicolò, one of the most fascinating valleys in Val di Fassa. You will follow a path that winds through crystal-clear streams, coniferous forests and flowery meadows, until you reach Passo San Nicolò (2,340 m). From here, the view opens onto a true natural masterpiece: the Marmolada, the Sella Group, the Catinaccio and the Monzoni. At sunset, you will reach your refuge at the foot of the Marmolada, where you can experience the magical moment of Enrosadira, when the Dolomites are tinged with golden and pink hues.
Day 3
Monzoni Group
+ 680m | - 790m | 5h00 | 10km
Today you will tackle a more challenging route, climbing up to the Pas de la Cirele (2,683 m), the highest point of the trek. Leaving behind the majesty of the Marmolada, you will enter the Monzoni Group, a corner of the Dolomites that is still little explored. Here silence reigns supreme and ibex, chamois and marmots populate the rocky landscape. You will cross environments in continuous transformation: from green meadows to woods, up to the rocky expanses of high altitude. After crossing the pass, you will descend along a panoramic path that will lead you to the meadows of the Passo San Pellegrino, where you will spend the night.
Day 4
Rolle Pass
+ 850m | - 700m | 5h00 | 15km
You will resume your journey from Passo San Pellegrino, heading towards Passo Valles, a historic border point between Trentino and Veneto. You will walk through spectacular scenery, where alpine meadows and larch forests alternate in a mosaic of colors and scents. Once you have crossed the pass, you will take a path that will lead you to Passo Rolle, crossing one of the most scenic areas of the Dolomites.
After a stretch through woods and open spaces, you will find yourself in front of an incredible panorama: the Pale di San Martino, with their imposing walls and the famous Cimon della Pala, often compared to the Matterhorn. Your day will end near the Baita Segantini, an iconic refuge overlooking an alpine lake, where you can admire one of the most extraordinary spectacles of the Dolomites: the Enrosadira on the Pale di San Martino.
Day 5
Colbricon Lakes
+ 320m | - 930m | 5h00 | 10km
Your journey in the Dolomites is coming to an end, but today will still offer you breathtaking scenery and an immersion in history. From Passo Rolle, you will enter the heart of the eastern Lagorai, a mountain massif very different from those explored so far. Here the landscape changes: the imposing Dolomite rocks give way to granite mountains, older and shaped by time. The Lagorai is a world in itself, rich in water and forests, with a wilder and more authentic atmosphere.
Going up the path, you will cross Cavallazza, a strategic point during the First World War. Here, trenches and artillery positions of the Austro-Hungarian army still overlook the valley, silent witnesses of a past that has marked these mountains. From the ridge, the view extends from the Pale di San Martino to the Lagorai, up to the southern face of the Marmolada.
The descent will take you to the Colbricon Lakes, two bodies of water nestled in a valley sheltered from the wind, surrounded by a forest of centuries-old spruce trees. A perfect place for a break: you can relax at the refuge on the shores of the lake or stop for a picnic before the last stage. From here, the trail continues to San Martino di Castrozza, the final destination of your trek.
Day 6
St. Martin of Castrozza
After days of adventure among spectacular peaks, your trek ends in historic San Martino di Castrozza, one of the first elite Alpine resorts. Once a refuge for aristocrats and artists, it inspired the likes of Richard Strauss and Arthur Schnitzler.
Unlike many other mountain destinations, San Martino has preserved its authenticity and timeless charm. If you still have a few hours before your departure, you can stroll through its streets rich in history, taste the local specialties or take the cable car to the Pale di San Martino, where the largest plateau in the Dolomites awaits you.
Day 7
Explore the Pale Plateau (7-day tour)
If you want to extend your adventure, this variant will allow you to discover the lunar landscape of the Altopiano delle Pale di San Martino, a huge expanse of high altitude that seems to belong to another planet. You can choose whether to stay in a hotel in San Martino or have a more authentic experience in a refuge.
With the cable car, you will go up to the heart of the plateau and from there you can reach Cima Fradusta, an extraordinary panoramic point that offers a 360° view of the surrounding Dolomites.
Day 8
A more relaxed experience and a breathtaking detour (8 days tour)
If you prefer a more leisurely pace and less demanding daily stages, the 8-day tour is the perfect option. This itinerary adds a detour through the Val d'Ombretta, at the foot of the majestic south face of the Marmolada, over 1,000 meters high.
You will spend two nights at the foot of the Queen of the Dolomites, allowing you to savor every moment of the journey without rushing. Furthermore, this variant avoids the Cirele Pass, choosing instead a gentler passage through the Monzoni Pass.
A more relaxed adventure, with the same charm and magic.
