Seceda is the most photographed ridgeline in the Dolomites: a meadow that stops dead and drops onto the spires of the Odle. You can be on top 15 minutes after leaving Ortisei by cable car, and that is both its gift and its problem. Here is how to do it well: lift times, the routes, the crowds, sunrise, and why for us it is only day one of something bigger.
We have worked in Val Gardena for years and know Seceda in every version: at 7 am with fog rising from Val di Funes, at 11 am in August with a queue at the top station, in late September when the larches in Val d'Anna turn yellow. This guide is what we tell our guests before they go up: practical, honest, and updated for the 2026 cable-car rules.
The Seceda ridge (2,519 m / 8,264 ft) and the Odle spires: the view that made Val Gardena famous.
In this guide
What Seceda is and where it is
Seceda (2,519 m / 8,264 ft) is the grassy summit that closes Val Gardena to the north, above Ortisei / St. Ulrich / Urtijëi in South Tyrol, northern Italy. It belongs to the Odle group (Geisler in German, Odles in Ladin: "needles") and sits inside the Puez-Odle Nature Park, one of the nine systems of the UNESCO Dolomites.
Its shape explains everything. From the Val Gardena side it is a gentle, almost dull slope of pasture; from the north, towards Val di Funes, it is a vertical wall. Along the crest the two worlds meet, and the spires of Sass Rigais (3,025 m) and Furchetta (3,025 m) rise out of the grass like blades. That is the "ridgeline" of the photos: not an exposed trail but a grassy edge with a void on one side and, on the other, the view over Sassolungo, Sella, Marmolada and Alpe di Siusi.
Quick answer
How to get up: Ortisei–Furnes–Seceda cable car, 15 minutes, 2026 summer season 22 May to 2 November, roughly 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. From 2026 tickets must be booked online for a time slot.
How far you walk: from 1 hour (ridge loop) to 5–6 hours (Adolf Munkel Weg loop). The classic is Seceda → Pieralongia → Rifugio Firenze → Col Raiser, about 3 hours, almost all downhill.
When: before 9 am or after 3 pm, on weekdays, ideally in September. Check live crowding on our crowd map.
Getting there: cable car, times and 2026 booking
Ortisei–Furnes–Seceda cable car
From Ortisei (1,236 m / 4,055 ft) you ride two sections: the Ortisei–Furnes gondola and then the Furnes–Seceda cable car, arriving at about 2,450 m (8,040 ft). Fifteen minutes in total. The valley station is in the village centre on Via Val d'Anna, a 5-minute walk from the main square. In 2026 the lifts run from 22 May to 2 November, daily from 8:30 am, with the last ride down around 5:30 pm. Dates shift slightly every year: always check seceda.it before you go.
New for 2026: Seceda tickets are now booked online in 30-minute time slots, with a limited number of places per slot. Tickets are non-refundable and cannot be changed, and the Dolomiti SuperSummer card is not valid on this lift. On peak days the first morning slots sell out: book a few days ahead, not the night before. And from 5 July 2026 a shuttle bus runs between Selva and Ortisei every 8 minutes, precisely because parking in the village cannot cope.
Alternative: Col Raiser from Santa Cristina
The Col Raiser gondola leaves from the north-eastern edge of Santa Cristina (1,428 m) and reaches 2,106 m (6,909 ft) on the pastures below the Odle. From there Rifugio Firenze / Regensburger Hütte (2,037 m) is 25 minutes away, and Seceda about 2 hours uphill on trails 2B–2A with 500 m (1,640 ft) of ascent. It is the quieter way in: shorter queues, parking at the bottom, open from late May to early November, and in 2026 still no booking required. If you want to walk up rather than only down, start here.
Without a car
Ortisei is served by bus line 350 from Bolzano / Ponte Gardena (train to Ponte Gardena–Laion, then bus). Between Selva, Santa Cristina and Ortisei the valley buses run every 8–15 minutes in summer and are free with the Val Gardena Mobil Card or the Gardena Card that hotels give their guests. Full details in our guide on how to get to the Dolomites.
The classic routes from Seceda
Five sensible itineraries start at the top station. We have ordered them by effort: net walking times, without stops, for an average hiker.
| Route | Time | Elevation | Difficulty | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · Ridgeline loop | 1 h | +100 / −100 m | Easy (T) | Everyone, including families with small children |
| 2 · Seceda → Pieralongia → Rif. Firenze → Col Raiser | ~3 h | +100 / −550 m | Easy-moderate (E) | The classic: almost all downhill, two huts |
| 3 · Seceda → Forcella Pana → Rif. Troier | 2–2.5 h | +50 / −300 m | Moderate (E) | Those who want to stand under the Odle north faces |
| 4 · Adolf Munkel Weg loop | 5–6 h | +700 / −900 m | Moderate-demanding (E) | Fit hikers, full day |
| 5 · Hike up from Ortisei | 3.5–4 h (ascent only) | +1,280 m (4,200 ft) | Demanding (E) | Those who skip the lift and have the legs |
1 · The ridgeline loop (1 hour)
From the top station it is a 20-minute climb to the summit cross (2,519 m), then you follow the crest east towards the Furchetta on a wide, obvious path. This is where every photo is taken. Nothing is technical, but the north edge is a real drop: hold children's hands and do not climb over the fences for a picture. Return the same way.
2 · Seceda → Pieralongia → Rifugio Firenze → Col Raiser (about 3 hours)
The hike we recommend to anyone with half a day. From the crest you descend south-east on trail 2A to the boulders of Pieralongia (around 2,300 m), a hut-cum-dairy under the Furchetta where the food is good and fast. Continue on 2B to Rifugio Firenze / Regensburger Hütte (2,037 m / 6,683 ft), a historic Alpine Club hut from 1888, then on trail 1 or 4 to the meadows of Col Raiser (2,106 m), where the gondola takes you down to Santa Cristina. From the village, a bus back to Ortisei takes 10 minutes. The descent is modest, but the path is stony: poles help.
3 · Seceda → Forcella Pana → Rifugio Troier (2–2.5 hours)
A less-trodden variant: from the crest you drop north-east to Forcella Pana (2,447 m), the saddle between Seceda and the Odle, and from there to Rifugio Troier (2,271 m) on open meadows at the foot of Sass Rigais. It is the place to understand how tall the Odle are up close. From Troier you can continue down to Col Raiser (another 40 minutes) or climb back to Seceda for the cable car.
4 · The Adolf Munkel Weg loop (5–6 hours)
For a full day out: from Seceda to Forcella Pana, then down on the Funes side until you join trail 35, the Adolf Munkel Weg, the balcony path that runs for kilometres under the Odle north faces between dwarf pines and scree. Finally you climb to Forcella Forces de Sielles (2,505 m) and descend to Rifugio Firenze and Col Raiser. Count on about 15 km (9 miles), 700 m of ascent and 900 m of descent (2,300 / 2,950 ft): this is already a trekking stage, not a stroll. In fog or with storms building, skip it: the stretch under the walls has no quick escape routes.
5 · Hiking up from Ortisei (3.5–4 hours)
If you want to earn the ridge, start in the centre of Ortisei on trail 6 through Val d'Anna, a shady wooded valley, to the Val d'Anna hut (Annaalm), then on trail 1 across the Cuca and Troier pastures to the top station and the crest. That is about 1,280 m (4,200 ft) of ascent: leave at 6 am and you are on the ridge before the first cabin arrives, then ride down. In 2026 even a descent-only ticket has a time slot: book it.
The crowds and how to avoid them
Let us be blunt: between late July and mid-August, from 10 am to 3 pm, the Seceda ridge is as crowded as a town square. It is not dangerous, but it is not the mountain you came for. The 2026 time slots limit how many people the lift carries, not how long they stay on top, so the midday peak remains.
The rules we follow with our own groups:
Before 9 am. Book the first slot (8:30). By 9 you are on the crest with an hour of good light and quiet. After 3 pm. Go up in the afternoon and you find the ridge emptying; the last ride down is around 5:30 pm, so the margin is real. Weekdays, not weekends. A sunny Saturday is the worst day of the year. September. Fewer people, clearer air, first frosts: the best month, as we explain in our guide on the best time to hike the Dolomites. Col Raiser instead of Ortisei. Coming up from the Santa Cristina side you reach the crest on foot, from below, and only meet the cable-car flow at the very end.
Before you set off, look at our live crowd map: it shows car-park occupancy and estimated crowding at the best-known spots, Seceda included, so you can decide in the morning whether to go up or change plan.
Sunrise and photography
The Seceda ridge in low light: the Odle glow for a few minutes at sunrise and sunset.
The famous frame is from the crest looking east-south-east: the spires of Furchetta and Sass Rigais in a row, meadow in the foreground, Val di Funes below. The best light is at sunrise, when the sun comes in from the east and lights the walls, and in the hour before sunset.
The problem: the cable car starts at 8:30 am and in June the sun rises at 5:20. For sunrise you have three honest options. Walk up in the dark from Ortisei or from Col Raiser (2 hours from there, with a headlamp): doable in stable weather with a little experience. Sleep high: Rifugio Firenze, Rifugio Troier, or the huts at Pieralongia and the dairies below Seceda put you 1–2 hours from the crest; book well ahead, they are full all summer. Settle for sunset: in September the sun sets around 7:15 pm, but the last cabin is at 5:30, so you only see the real sunset if you then walk down (1.5 hours to Col Raiser by headlamp, or 2.5 to Ortisei). Plan it, do not improvise.
Practical tips: wide-angle for the ridge, telephoto for the spires; a polarising filter helps with summer haze; in September bring gloves, dawn on the crest is often 0–3 °C (32–37 °F). And respect the fences: the north edge is, literally, crumbling.
Puez-Odle: Seceda is only one day
This is the part we care about. Seceda is the front door to the Puez-Odle Nature Park: 10,000 hectares (25,000 acres) between Val Gardena, Val di Funes and Val Badia, with the Odle, the Puez, the Sassongher, the karst plateaus of Gardenaccia and Forcella Roa (2,617 m / 8,586 ft). Ride the lift, photograph the ridge, ride down, and you have seen the cover of the book.
Our Puez-Odle Classic Trek is the whole book: 5–7 days hut to hut, based in Val Gardena, linking Seceda to the Adolf Munkel Weg, to the finest sections of Alta Via 2 across the Puez plateau, to Rifugio Puez and Val Badia. Level 3 on our scale: 5–7 hour stages, 800–1,000 m (2,600–3,300 ft) of ascent per day, no mandatory via ferrata. Groups of 8 at most, huts already booked, and you see the Seceda ridge early in the morning, from the trail, with the spires coming out of the Funes fog. If you are wondering whether to go with a guide or on your own, we wrote an honest guide on guided vs self-guided trekking.

What to bring, families, winter
What to bring
Even for the ridge loop alone: hiking shoes with a proper tread (wet grass on the crest is slippery), a windproof jacket, one warm layer even in July (at 2,500 m the north wind is cold), water, sunscreen. For routes 2–5 add poles, a hat, a spare layer and a 1:25,000 map (Tabacco 05) or an offline GPS track. Weather on the crest turns in 20 minutes: if you see cumulus building over the Sella at midday, head down. The full list is in our packing guide.
With children
Seceda is among the most family-friendly summits in the Dolomites: cable car, wide path, a hut every hour. The ridge loop works from age 3–4 with care at the edge; route 2 to Col Raiser from 6–7, though the stony stretch below Pieralongia is tiring. Strollers: not beyond the top station. Under 8s ride the cable car free with an adult.
In winter
From December to April Seceda is a Dolomiti Superski area: the cable car runs and in 15 minutes you are on a snow-covered crest, often with clearer visibility than in summer. The ridge loop is done on snowshoes or boots with microspikes, staying on the packed track: the north edge is a snow cornice, not grass. The trails to Rifugio Firenze and Col Raiser are pistes in winter, not hiking routes. For the high huts, count on the summer season: most open in mid-June and close between late September and mid-October.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the Seceda hike?
It depends on the route: the ridgeline loop from the top station takes about 1 hour; the classic Seceda → Pieralongia → Rifugio Firenze → Col Raiser about 3 hours; the Adolf Munkel Weg loop 5–6 hours. Hiking up from Ortisei takes 3.5–4 hours with 1,280 m (4,200 ft) of ascent.
Do I need to book the Seceda cable car?
Yes. From summer 2026 the Ortisei–Furnes–Seceda cable car is booked online in 30-minute time slots with limited places; tickets are non-refundable and cannot be changed. In 2026 the lifts run from 22 May to 2 November, roughly 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. The Col Raiser gondola from Santa Cristina does not require booking.
Can you hike Seceda without the cable car?
Yes. From Ortisei take trail 6 through Val d'Anna and then trail 1 to the crest: about 1,280 m (4,200 ft) of ascent, 3.5–4 hours. Shorter from Col Raiser (gondola from Santa Cristina): about 2 hours and 500 m of ascent on trails 2B and 2A.
When is the best time to avoid crowds on Seceda?
Before 9 am or after 3 pm, on weekdays, and in general in September: fewer people and clearer air. The busiest period is late July to mid-August between 10 am and 3 pm, especially at weekends. The Dolomist crowd map shows live crowding.
Can you see the sunrise from Seceda?
Not by cable car, which opens at 8:30 am. For sunrise you need to walk up in the dark (2 hours from Col Raiser, 3.5–4 from Ortisei) or sleep in a high hut such as Rifugio Firenze or Rifugio Troier, 1–2 hours from the crest. Book well in advance.
Is Seceda suitable for families?
Yes, it is one of the most child-friendly summits in the Dolomites: cable car, wide path, frequent huts. The ridge loop works from age 3–4 keeping children away from the north edge; the descent to Col Raiser from 6–7. Under 8s ride the cable car free with an adult.
