In a rugged, untamed corner of the Friulian Dolomites, there is a place that doesn’t just welcome you — Rifugio Giaf is a meeting point.
Between those who leave and those who return.
Between a mountain that changes every year, and those who wish to learn how to truly listen.

You don’t come here for artificial comforts.
You come to truly breathe.
To walk along little-traveled paths, to listen to deep silences, to rediscover something you thought was lost.

Rock towers carved by time.
Alpine meadows that suddenly open before you.
Animal tracks. Rare voices.

Giaf is both boundary and beginning.
Not a destination, but a living base — a place to start from, to understand, protect, and respect nature.
To experience a wild trek through the Friulian Dolomites, and to rediscover the slow, human rhythm of the true mountain.

A refuge open to the world

Rifugio Giaf – Dolomiti Friulane - Dolomist

The refuge

The Giaf Refuge is located in 1400 meters above sea level, on the north-east side of Monfalconi and Monte Cridola. It is a simple, essential, true refuge.
Spread over two floors, with a dining room with small baron the ground floor and cozy rooms on the upper floor and in the attic.
The heart of the refuge is the “to light the fire”, the traditional fireplace around which stories, cold hands and glasses of grappa are gathered. Outside, one can stop and contemplate.
There is a picnic area among the larches, a small playground for the little ones, a bivouac-house, one stallion for horses, and a votive chapel dedicated to the fallen of the mountain, where every first Sunday of August a commemorative ceremony is held followed by the mountain festival.

Hospitality that leaves a memory
The Giaf Refuge is a place where tourism is still slow, human, sincere.
Where the landscape is not a postcard, but a living story, that changes every year.
Where sleeping is a simple yet profound gesture. Where eating well means recognizing the flavors of the land and of travel. It is a fixed point in a constantly changing landscape.
A place for those who want truly experience the mountain, and take home something that cannot be bought: an adventure, an indelible memory, a true experience.

Our Team

You will find Alessandro and Marco. Two friends who met in front of a good beer - as often happens with important things - and decided to believe in a refuge immersed in the Friulian Dolomites, open to the world.

Alessandro: tireless explorer, he has crossed Canadian forests, arctic tundras, caves and glaciers. Speleologist by passion, he is in love with the wild forms that surround the Giaf. Here he has chosen to put down roots and live every day as a new beginning.

Marco: a chef by vocation and a dreamer by nature. After experiences around the world – including Australia – he decided to bring authentic cuisine open to meeting to 1400 meters. Every dish he prepares is the result of a true contamination, local and global at the same time.

Every summer, with them, there is a small world. An international team of volunteers and collaborators who come from every corner of the planet, bringing new energy, different languages, fresh ideas. Here we laugh a lot, we work like a family, and we speak every possible language.
